Welcome, are we related?

My late uncle always said he kept "the family's genealogy" but alas, I never questioned him further or asked to see what he had. I undertook to discover for myself who I was, in about 1997. Shortly after this start, and years after his passing, a surprise gift arrived for me from his son. Inside this day-by-day calendar journal my uncle had tracked family life -- births, deaths, weddings, etc.with  newspaper clippings for these events or handwritten entries. Indeed a beautiful gift that started me on my road to finding out more. There is a separate family tree for the entries of this journal. Available only to approved family members.

From several hundred to many thousands of people later, and I've only scratched the surface. So, if you feel you belong, have a look for a late, common ancestor and drop the Site Admin a line.

1. Leibish/Louis M ALTER and his first wife Sarah MEISEL by whom he had five children and

2. Leibish/Louis M ALTER and his second wife Freida "Fanny" DRUKARSH by whom he had seven children.

Louis arrived at New York via Ellis Island, in August 1905. He was about 24. There are variations of his place of birth as Lvov, Lagov, Lukow in Poland, often shown as Poland/Russia. His departure to North America was from Trieste, Italy, one of the ports commonly used for passage. He probably had siblings in Canada prior to his arrival.

No records have been found of his or Sarah's entry to Canada, as overland rail, at that time, was not recorded. However, record does show birth of his first child, Issie Daniel (Ed), in 1907, to be in Toronto. So, possibly he arrived in Toronto and married Sarah between those dates, assuming he knew her already.  Louis and Sarah had five children (four survived).

After Sarah's death in Apr 1921, Louis remarried that July to Freida (Fanny) Drukarsh, who had immigrated to Toronto in Dec 1920. Louis and Freida had seven children, before his death in Aug 1944. Fanny lived to see nine grandchildren born before her death in Jul 1956.

Ontario privacy for vital records is 104 years after birth, 76 years after death and 82 years after marriage. Settings for this site keep records private for 82 years after death. Where dates are unknown, a mathematical probability equation is used by the software, to determine if the person is deceased. Due to the existence of incomplete date fields, these calculations cannot be 100% accurate. Should you find a person's record displayed in error, please contact the Site Admin.
